Professor Alam has supervised 18 PhD students to successful completion, as well as post-doctoral and mid-career researchers. He is currently supervising a diverse group of twelve PhD students.

Professor Alam is a member of the leadership team of USQ’s Centre for Health Research and leading health economics research.. He is currently a co-editor of the Australasian Journal of Regional Studies. He is also an executive committee member of the Australia New Zealand Regional Science Association International.

Research most notable
Professor Alam has published over 170 articles in highly impactful journals in his fields of research (70% in top-quartile/Q1 SJR journals), prepared many industry and research reports, and refereed conference proceedings. His research has been funded by local, state and federal governments in Australia and by not-for-profit organisations. His current Google Scholar H-index is 34 with over 5,600 citations, and similarly his Scopus H-index is 32 with over 4,500 citations.

Professor Alam is the recipient of the inaugural Ronel Erwee Memorial Award for Excellence in Postgraduate Research Supervision in 2017. He is also the winner of ten Publication Excellence Awards at USQ. He is the winner of the 2019 Faculty of Business, Education, Law and Arts Excellence Award for Research, and 2020 Postgraduate Research Supervision Award.
