Research interests
Our research is placed at the intersection of economics, criminology and terrorism studies. We use both behavioral and orthodox economics to analyse terrorist choice, especially the choice of attack method. Our applications of prospect theory, for example, allow us to provide explanations for aspects of terrorist decision-making, including rivalries with other groups, the basis for copycat behavior and changes in risk preferences over time. I have applied these frameworks also to study terrorist choice where media attention is the desired (but uncertain) payoff to terrorist action. In particular, my work is focused on the terrorism context of West Germany in the 1970s where groups such as the Red Army Faction and 2nd of June Movement were prominent and vying for attention.
