Dr Dowden's current research interests include junior secondary curriculum and pedagogy (Years 7-10) and the scholarship of learning and teaching in higher education. He has published over 60 research outputs and his work has been cited over 800 times. His research utilises theoretical, psychological, sociological, historical and qualitative methodologies.

Dr Dowden's contribution to research has been recognised through a number of awards including the New Zealand Association of Research in Education's Sutton-Smith Doctoral Award for excellence (NZARE, 2007), a Faculty of Education award for Early Career Researchers that recognised 'a significant contribution to research' (University of Tasmania, 2012), a Research Merit Certificate (UTas, 2012), and two UniSQ Research Excellence awards (2014 & 2015). In addition, Dr Dowden is the Academic Editor for the Australian Journal of Middle Schooling and a Contributing Editor for the Australian Journal of Teacher Education.

Dr Dowden has supervised/ is currently supervising 12 doctoral students.

Dr Dowden's contribution to quality learning and teaching at the tertiary level has been recognised by a Teaching Merit award (University of Tasmania, 2009) and a Teaching Commendation (UniSQ, 2016). He has also been accepted as a Fellow by the Higher Education Academy (UK). Dr Dowden's current scholarship interest in the university learning and teaching context is students' perceptions of and emotions pertaining to written feedback on assessment.
