Research interests
Dr Dowden's research interests include: junior secondary curriculum and pedagogy (Years 7-10), curriculum integration, and the scholarship of learning and teaching. His research utilises theoretical, sociological, historical and qualitative methodologies. Dr Dowden is interested in supervising research projects in the above fields as well as the broader educational context, including upper primary, junior and senior secondary, and tertiary settings.

Dr Dowden has supervised/is supervising eleven higher degree research students, including five PhD completions. Projects include: initial teacher education for the middle years of schooling (Years 5-9), parents' perceptions of bullying in the junior secondary years (Years 7-9) and a case study of a new Year 9 campus in an independent school.

Dr Dowden's contribution to research has been recognised through a number of awards including: the New Zealand Association of Research in Education's Sutton-Smith Doctoral Award for excellence (NZARE, 2007), a Faculty of Education award for Early Career Researchers that recognized 'a significant contribution to research' (University of Tasmania, 2012), a Research Merit Certificate (UTas, 2012), and two School-specific Research Excellence awards (USQ, 2014 & 2015). In addition, Dr Dowden is the Academic Co-Editor of the Australian Journal of Middle Schooling and a Contributing Editor for the Australian Journal of Teacher Education.

Dr Dowden's contribution to quality learning and teaching at the tertiary level has been recognised by a Teaching Merit award (University of Tasmania, 2009) and a Teaching Commendation (USQ, 2016). His scholarship interests in the university learning and teaching context include: perceptions of written feedback on assessment, students' resilience, academic literacy, and students' experiences in online, on-campus and blended learning contexts.
