Dr Ong is a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science within School of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Southern Queensland, Australia. He was awarded with a PhD in Medical Biochemistry at the University of Newcastle, Australia in 2012. His PhD thesis investigated the neurobiological consequences of stress and the regulation of catecholamine. Subsequently, he has been researching and teaching in the field of Neuroscience, Physiology, Medical Biochemistry and Pharmacology. First as a Research Associate at the University of Newcastle (2012-2014) on the role of systematic inflammation on neurodegeneration. Second as a Senior/Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Hunter Medical Research Institute (2015-2019) on translational stroke recovery. Third as a Lecturer in Basic Physiology within the School of Pharmacy and established his independent research group on Translational Neurorecovery at Monash University, Malaysia (2019-2022). He uses a multidisciplinary approach to understand the mechanisms of brain degeneration after stroke and other neurological conditions, and pursue development of innovative therapies to promote brain recovery.
