Research topics

Janani graduated from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka as a medical doctor in 1999. She completed her MD in Community Medicine in 2007 from the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo and later a PhD in Public Health and Community Medicine from the University of New South Wales, Sydney. In 2014, after a 10 year tenure in the capacity of Lecture/Senior Lecturer at the Department of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, Janani joined the research cadre at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. Janani's primary research interests focus on prevention and management of chronic disease, especially diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In addition, she has interests in rural health including farmer health and safety, and physical activity and nutrition research. Janani has extensive experience in conducting large epidemiological studies and promoting health and hygiene among populations displaced due to natural disasters like tsunami. Janani is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health and a member of the Public Health Association of Australia, Sri Lanka Medical Association and the Sri Lanka College of Community Physicians. She has several publications in leading medical journals and has presented at a number of international conferences.
