Catherine Dewhirst is Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Southern Queensland, where she teaches courses on the histories of Europe, global interrelations, women's experiences and 'voices', racism and discrimination in Australia, and historiography. She is a member of UniSQ's Centre for Heritage and Culture, Institute for Resilient Regions. She has supervised the dissertations of 11 Honours students on a diverse range of topics and the research projects one Master of Arts student and seven PhD students (three as principal/co-principal supervisor) to successful completion. At present the research projects of three PhD students and two Master of Research students are under her supervision as principal supervisor, as well as one Honours student's dissertation. With a research background in women's and migration histories, Catherine has published on the effects of the politics of whiteness and racism on Italian migrant communities, the Italian-migrant periodical press, family histories and memories, and women's social, cultural and political experiences. Her most recent publications include two co-edited books (Palgrave Macmillan 2020, 2021) which explore Australia's migrant and minority voices through historic ethnic newspapers and other media ventures in Australia. She is currently working on a collaborative research project that engages with second-generation Italian migrants whose parents were interned in Australia between 1940 and 1945. She is also writing a book on the entangled relationship between Liberal Italy and editors of the Italian migrant press from four nations, which contributed to Italy's colonisation of migrant communities worldwide from the age of imperialism to World War II.
