Dr Annette Brömdal is a Senior Lecturer in Sport, Health and Physical Education at USQ. Prior to their academic position at USQ Annette worked at the United Nations Development Fund for Women (now UN WOMEN) and coordinated projects and initiatives preventing trafficking in women in Thailand by addressing normative dimensions of demand. Annette’s research interests fall within the areas of bodies, gender and sexuality in elite sports, medicine, contemporary sexuality education, the corrective service system, and around ageing, specifically associated with critical intersex studies and critical trans* discourses. Annette is currently leading a research project investigating the lived experiences of formerly incarcerated transgender people in Australia and collaborates with scholars in associated fields in the US, New Zealand and Europe. Dr Brömdal’s publications include articles in scholarly journals such as the International Journal of Transgenderism; International Journal of Sport Policy and Politics; Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education; Review of Education, Pedagogy and Cultural Studies; Qualitative Research Journal; and International Journal of Research & Method in Education; book chapters in Responsibility and Responsibilisation in Education (2018 Routledge); The Palgrave Handbook of Sexuality Education (2017); LGBTQ+ Studies in Education: Theoretical Interventions in Curriculum and Pedagogy (Fortcoming; Palgrave); The Palgrave Handbook of Incarceration across Popular Media (2020); Uplifting Careers in Gender & Sexuality in Education (2019; Palgrave) and single authored books: Intersex – A Challenge for Human Rights and Citizenship Rights (2008 VDM Verlag). Annette’s contribution to quality research and publications, and learning and teaching have been recognised through the USQ School of Education's Q1 Research Awards (2020); USQ Unit-Specific Publication Excellence Award (2019), and the School of Education Teaching Excellence Award (2015, Deakin) for her sustained excellence in Good Teaching from 2012 -2015. Annette's teaching is underpinned by collaborative practice, inquiry based learning, critical pedagogy, and social-activist-educator-ideology. Dr Brömdal is an International Sociological Association's 2022 Local Organising Committee Member responsible for the 2022 World Congress for Sociology's Inclusion and Equity portfolio and is currently working towards the 2022 World Congress of Sociology in Melbourne. Dr Brömdal is the past Co-Convenor of the Gender, Sexualities and Cultural SIG for AARE (2016 - 20202) and currently a member of the Queensland Action Group for LGBTIQ+ Students, is a Queensland Queering Education Consultative Committee member and is the USQ School of Education Director for the Masters of Education Program and the Academic Team Leader for Inclusive Education and Social Justice (2019-2022).

Research interests
