Research interests
Dr Annette Brömdal is a Senior Lecturer in Sport, Health and Physical Education at USQ. Prior to her academic position at USQ Annette worked at the United Nations Development Fund for Women (now UN WOMEN) and coordinated projects and initiatives preventing trafficking in women in Thailand by addressing normative dimensions of demand.

Annette’s current research interests fall within the areas of bodies, gender and sexuality in elite sports, medicine, contemporary sexuality education and the corrective service system.

More specifically, Annette’s research work is concerned with bodies, gender and sexuality in elite sports and medicine is something she examines in her upcoming book entitled The Making of ‘Intersex’ in Female Elite Sports. This research brings together in dialogue IOC/IAAF medical representatives involved in the management/treatment of athletes with intersex variations, intersex organisation representatives and female athletes, and examines their ways of thinking about how bodies and athletic performances are marked and regulated. The research also develops understandings of how on-going practices of the regulation of female athletic bodies have been justified, continued and discontinued.

Despite transgender and gender diverse prisoners recently gaining legal and policy acknowledgements in wider society and prison systems around the world, Annette is also exploring to what extent transgender people in prison are at greater risk of experiencing bullying, violence, harassment, coercion and sexual assault than other prisoners, and as a consequence fear for their safety while incarcerated. This research project investigates the treatment transgender people in prison receive from correctional staff and what level of transgender-specific knowledge these staff-members have. As there remains little understanding regarding these two topics in Australia, Dr Brömdal is in the process of exploring this gap of understanding as prison management and prison officers play an important role in providing a safe, secure and humane living environment that promotes the health and well-being of vulnerable prisoners.

Dr Brömdal’s publications include articles in scholarly journals such as the International Journal of Transgenderism; Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education; Review of Education, Pedagogy and Cultural Studies; Qualitative Research Journal; and International Journal of Research & Method in Education; book chapters in Responsibility and Responsibilisation in Education (2018 Routledge); The Palgrave Handbook of Sexuality Education (2017); LGBTQ+ Studies in Education: Theoretical Interventions in Curriculum and Pedagogy (In press; Palgrave); The Palgrave Handbook of Incarceration across Popular Media (In press); Uplifting Careers in Gender & Sexuality in Education (In press; Palgrave) and single authored books: Intersex – A Challenge for Human Rights and Citizenship Rights (2008 VDM Verlag); and The Making of ‘Intersex’ in Female Elite Sports (forthcoming 2020 Palgrave).

Annette’s contribution to quality research and publications, and learning and teaching have been recognised through the USQ Unit-Specific Publication Excellence Award (2019), and the School of Education Teaching Excellence Award (2015, Deakin) for her sustained excellence in Good Teaching from 2012 -2015. Annette's teaching is underpinned by collaborative practice, inquiry based learning, critical pedagogy, and social-activist-educator-ideology.

Dr Brömdal is the Co-Convenor of the Gender, Sexualities and Cultural SIG for AARE (2016 - 2019) and is currently working towards the AARE Conference at QUT in Brisbane. Annette is currently a member of the Queensland Action Group for LGBTIQ+ Students, is a Queensland Queering Education Consultative Committee member and is the USQ SoE Director for the Masters of Education Program and the Academic Team Leader for Inclusive Education and Social Justice (2019-2022).
